Paul Anthony Iaizzo

Paul Anthony Iaizzo, a 1974 graduate of White Bear Lake's Mariner Campus, has built an extraordinary career that bridges science, medicine, engineering, and education, while remaining deeply rooted in service to students and community.

Dr. Iaizzo is a professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he has served for more than 35 years. He is internationally recognized for his leadership as a Director of the Visible Heart Laboratories and for his role in guiding the Institute for Engineering in Medicine. His pioneering work has advanced the understanding of cardiac physiology and medical device development, influencing both clinical practice and biomedical innovation worldwide.

A lifelong learner, Dr. Iaizzo earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He went on to complete a Ph.D. in Neurophysiology at the Mayo Clinic. His academic path included prestigious fellowships, including an NIH Fellowship at Mayo and the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship in Germany.

Equally important to his research is his commitment to mentoring and education. Over his career, Dr. Iaizzo has trained more than 140 graduate students and, for more than two decades, has opened the doors of the Visible Heart Laboratories to White Bear Lake Area High School students - providing them a rare, hands-on experience to real-world medical research and inspiring many to pursue careers in science, medicine, and engineering.

Beyond academia, Dr. Iaizzo has remained actively engaged in the White Bear Lake community. He and his wife, Marge, have been married more than 40 years, raised three daughters - all White Bear graduates. He coached youth basketball and soccer for over a decade and continues to find joy in time spent with his grandchildren. His personal interests include beekeeping, foraging, and more than 28 years of involvement in black bear research.

Dr. Iaizzo's career reflects the powerful combination of intellectual curiosity, generosity of spirit, and dedication to the success of others - values at the heart of the White Bear Wall of Fame.

He was inducted in 2025.
