Spring MCA Results

Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) results were released this week. Overall, K-8 White Bear Lake Area Schools scores remain above statewide proficiency levels in reading, math and science.

“Our overall district scores are above the state average, but in order for us to be at the forefront of educational excellence we know we can and must do better,” said Superintendent Wayne Kazmierczak. “Students need reading proficiency and math fluency to be successful in life.”

The district is focused on redesigning learning and inspiring students to create their success. An example of this redesign is the unification process currently underway at White Bear Lake Area High School. “When the community came together to create the vision for the unified White Bear Lake Area High School five years ago, discussions around the physical space and the learning environment went hand in hand,” said Kazmierczak. “The changes we envisioned many years ago can come to fruition as students from the two campuses come together and benefit from the mentoring, modeling and foundation being built to meet students’ needs.”

Another example of redesigned learning is a collaborative approach our elementary educators’ have taken by participating in rigorous literacy training. The focused work teachers have implemented during the last couple of years has helped our elementary students build a strong foundation in language development, which will continue to benefit them throughout their lives. Work at the middle school level also continues to focus on teachers collaborating and having high expectations for students learning grade-level standards.   

“We understand there will be a period of transition as we implement new strategies and strengthen those that exist,” said Kazmierczak. “We know the importance of getting it right for every one of our students.”
