Three High School Alpine Skiers Qualify for the State Tournament

Two members of the WBLAHS Boys' Alpine Ski Team and one member of the Girls' Alpine Ski Team are heading to the State Tournament after a great showing during the Section 7 championships at Giants Ridge on Feb. 3.

During the Section competition, the boys first run was set on Innsbruck. Cooper Feirn fired out of the start fast and skied a great line to finish sixth. Angus Levins skied in control, focused on each turn and quickly finished 10th. This allowed the boys some flexibility going into the steeper course in the afternoon on Helsinki.  Assistant Coach Eric Shipe let the boys know that Helsinki is the "equalizer ski tactically". Cooper and Angus skied the steep pitch on the second run very tactically and then both let it rip to the finish on the flats. The boys field was stacked with many of the state's best racers. Angus finished fourth and Cooper finished seventh to qualify for the State championship next week.

Josie Guidinger skied Helsinki in the morning and was placed 14th. She handled the steep section very well and took some risks. Her second run was very smooth and fast. Josie felt it was one of her best runs of the season. She skied strong and in control on each turn finishing 15th in a very competitive field of racers. She also advances to State. This is the second trip to the State championship for all three. Both the boys and girls tournaments are taking place at Giants Ridge on February 10. Good luck and Go Bears!
