Course Guide

Course delivery is the way in which educational content is conveyed from teacher to students. Courses can be delivered in a variety of ways. Not all delivery options are available for every course. Please see course descriptions for which options are available for each course.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program is an opportunity for students to pursue college-level courses while in high school. Participating colleges grant credit and/or advanced standing to students who have done well on the AP exams. More than 90% of the colleges and universities in the United States accept AP credits. A fee is charged by the testing service for each subject in which an exam is taken.

Students who enroll in these classes should be prepared for rigorous coursework and/or have special interest and ability related to the subject. Students should check with the college/university they plan to attend to determine how they will award college credit.

White Bear Lake Area High School is proud to offer opportunities for students to participate in college-level coursework.

Students who take college-level courses benefit from the rigorous coursework and generally score higher on the ACT. In addition, college admission counselors look for these courses when reviewing applications, as they are a good indicator of college preparedness.

Concurrent Enrollment

Concurrent enrollment courses provide actual college credit for courses taught at WBLAHS. Students can stay on our high school campus and get first-hand experience with a faster pace of study and increased academic rigor, supporting a smoother transition from high school to college. These courses receive additional weighting in GPA calculations. Each course has specific criteria for admission, and interested students should confer with a counselor to determine eligibility. Students earn college credit on a college transcript, transferable to most colleges and universities. High school students are held to the same academic standards as students on a university campus. Teachers are selected, trained, and supported by college faculty.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

The Project Lead the Way program at White Bear Lake Area High School has been awarded site certification by the national Project Lead the Way. Students who complete PLTW courses and pass the online end-of-course exam may obtain three credits from participating colleges and universities. Many colleges and universities in Minnesota and nationwide accept the credits. Students who complete a PLTW course and take the PLTW exam may receive additional weighting in GPA calculation.

Articulated College Credit

Many career and technical education courses at WBLAHS have articulation agreements with local colleges in the Metro. An articulated course is a course taught at the high school by a high school teacher, and has been deemed by college faculty 100% equivalent or partially equivalent to a college course offered at a specific institution. If a student who successfully completes the high school course attends the partnering college as an undergraduate student, the college will award credit to the student on their transcript for that high school class. This saves the student time and money once enrolled in the college!
